1. I do not think it is a craze. For the most part, transsexuals and hermaphrodites (to use the old terminology) are less willing to hide their gender identity.
2. Unless things have changed radically, having a sex change operation — again I am using the old terminology for my audience — is not something that can be done on a whim. The person seeking the operation has to go through years of therapy, voice coachwork, living as the sex they wish to become, etc.
