Expect These Protests to Become the New Norm

First-up, I don’t really care. I never heard of this movie until it popped up in my news feeds today, and I haven’t heard anything of it since then that makes me think it’s a movie I’ll ever see.

Second-up, these pleas of “it’s acting!” and such would be a lot more persuasive if coming out wasn’t still seen as a career-risky move for gay actors.

Or to put it another way… either gay actors are categorically bad actors compared to their straight peers, or these folks aren’t hiring the “best actor” anyway. And seeing as I’m not inclined to believe that an actor’s theatrical talent depends on their orientation, I’m pretty skeptical that the casting process is as merit-based as the defenders would have us believe.

Hollywood can, of course, prove me wrong. But they do have decades of proving me right, so I don’t think it’s unfair to not give them the benefit of the doubt here.

No other minority group would put up with this.

Jungle Cruise…….hmm……next news item, thank you.

      • posted by Matthew on

No, no, and no. We’re going to settle this right here and right now. JUNGLE CRUISE is a Disney movie, and Disney directly targets children; some of their first memories are often formed by Disney movies, TV shows, and parks. For them to do this sends two messages to their audience: one, that it’s okay to make fun of gay people, and two, that it’s okay for heterosexuals to steal from gay people.

Even Walt Disney could cast an actual black man as Uncle Remus. This is a step in the wrong direction.

And technically, if you want to count Touchstone, the first openly gay Disney character was Coco, the Golden Girls’ cook from the pilot episode.

“Imagine being angry at the discovery that acting involves actors pretending to be people they aren’t.”

    That was an epic put-down.

Now excuse me while I continue pretending I’m not pretending to be a straight man.

My sympathies are the opposite of yours, JohninCA, except that as you say I do not care. The Employment Non-Discrimination Act failed, and as a result, the film industry is permitted to discriminate against straight actors. So it’s reasonable to ask why don’t they do so.

Gayface is blackface. Why should gay actors have to settle for heterosexual actors taking our roles when other minority groups don’t?

      • posted by Jorge on

        Gayface is blackface.

You know when I read that I immediately thought of the word “transvestite.”

I still remember when the live action Peter Pan starred a woman, The Importance of Being Earnest was played in drag, Doubt was headlined by a married woman, and the hick in Brokeback Mountain had to go off and die in real life. I’ve personally seen drag queens and transgender women share the same event and whites attain leadership positions in minority clubs.

I fail to see any good reason to treat homosexuality any differently, other than a paranoid wish to see all dissent from gay orthodoxy eradicated. Such sentiments only have the opposite effect, giving truth to the lie that gay is a mental disorder.

Tr*ns “women” are men, and it is the textbook definition of misogyny to call men in womanface “women.” Tr*ns is a choice. Gay isn’t. To conflate the two is a form of homophobia.

Gayface is still blackface. Why should gays be forced to give up our roles to some thieving hetero perverts?

        • posted by Matthew on

It was Walt Disney who broke theatrical tradition by casting a male actor, Bobby Driscoll, as the voice of Peter Pan in his 1953 film version. Try again.

        • posted by Matthew on

If by “gay orthodoxy” you mean the demand of gay men and lesbians for dignity, respect, and worldwide acceptance under punishment of law for those who cling to their homophobic ways, I’d gladly see all dissent from that terminated with extreme prejudice.

    • posted by JohnInCA on

Eh, the performance roles for radio, television, movies, theater and so-on aren’t under the provisions of non-discrimination law anyway. The “support” roles are, but not anyone that’s going to be in front of a camera.

So the NDA is a bit of a red herring.

FWIW, Chyler Leigh plays the lesbian sister on The CW’s Supergirl, complete with a girlfriend story arc, kissing and all. She’s straight.
On Legends of Tomorrow on the CW, one character was portrayed as gay and played by a gay man, another actor is gay and played a straight man.
Greg Berlanti is the brains behind these shows and others on the CW and gay.

First, you can stop calling heterosexual perversion straight.

Second, Greg Berlanti is still an Uncle Tom if he thinks heterosexuality is normal or should be tolerated in any way, shape, or form. He shows he thinks gay male actors are more worthy of playing gay male parts than lesbians are of playing lesbians. He also pushes tranny-fucker propaganda in SUPERGIRL so, like I said, he is just another Uncle Tom.

Third, comic book shows and movies are for kids and kidults. They do not take the place of gay movies and TV aimed at adults and addressing adult concerns.

Fourth, Ryan Murphy is also a hack. Casting gentiles as Jews, especially in the role of Harold in THE BOYS IN THE BAND in which Zachary Quinto was miscast in a role originated brilliantly by Leonard Frey, one that should have gotten an Oscar Nomination for the movie but because of the homophobia of the AMPAS did not, is a form of antisemitism. Of the two, Murphy is worse because he enabled the hetero male pedophile Mark Salling, and since GLEE degenerated into transcult propaganda, it’s pretty much proof that their agenda is a pro-pedo and anti-gay one.

      We can do better.

Matthew Anscher, you’re telling folks what they should say, again..
I don’t care to argue with you because you have your views, and use words in your idiosyncratic way, like Humpty Dumpty: “”When I use a word,” Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, “it means just what I choose it to mean—neither more nor less.” “The question is,” said Alice, “whether you can make words mean so many different things.” “The question is,” said Humpty Dumpty, “which is to be master—that’s all.” Which is, I guess, appropriate for a would be Dominant Male.
I love men, literally, and physically, but I try to love everyone: and not hate anybody: but I loath bullying, meanness, abuse, violence to seek power, and lies.
Men and women do these things, and I imagine there are as many evil abusive women as men: but men have more power, in the world I live in.
You natter about Heterosexuality being perversion, and “If the world was gay and Jewish” (which makes little sense: I actually knew a Gay rabbi, a hot man and center on the Atlanta Bucks Rugby team…) and el Jibbity. I don’t know what has damaged you so badly, but anger is not empowering. Be a mensch.
I knew RuPaul when he had a genderfuck band, WeeWeePole, and thought I didn’t get drag, it was clear he was going places. I got beat up by skinheads outside the Wreck Room in ATL going to aid of a (straight) friend, a little guy, but a bantam rooster, who three of these big jerks decided to stomp. I got a broken nose, and teeth (and still have dental issues because of it): Chuck had brain damage and started having seizures, and would drink himself to death 4 years ago. If you support the abuse of power, and beating folks up, go to hell.

Alpha male-bashing is not love. It’s misandry, just like homophobia.

“You natter about Heterosexuality being perversion”

It’s true and you know it. The Jewish God created men for men and women for women.

” I don’t know what has damaged you so badly”

You’re the damaged one and your sanctimoniously banal platitudes in praise of gay erasure can’t erase that. Project much?

“I got beat up by skinheads outside the Wreck Room in ATL going to aid of a (straight) friend, a little guy, but a bantam rooster, who three of these big jerks decided to stomp.”

This is what you get for aiding breeders.

“If you support the abuse of power, and beating folks up, go to hell.”

If you tolerate heterosexual perversion and pseudoscientific gay erasure in the name of heterosexual supremacy, you are creating a hell on Earth for gay people. Yes, I support violence against anti-gay bigots. Yes, I support violence as a response to all things anti-gay. Yes, I support gay supremacy. Yes, I support Jewish supremacy. Yes, I support POC supremacy. I support those things because I’m a decent human being and if you were one, you would, too.

I dont care whether or not a actor is gay or not. I do care about what happens to LGBT actors who come out.

    • posted by Matthew on

Allies say gay, bigots say el-jibbity. You should care whether actors are gay. You should care whether gay actors are forced to give up gay roles to thieving and conniving heterosexual male sociopaths. You should care whether your money is keeping closet doors shut and locked. And frankly, who knows better than a gay man how to play a gay man?

By your logic, we never should have gotten rid of blackface.

First, we can’t even get gay roles unless we condescend to working with tacky schlockmeisters who benefit from white privilege and gentile privilege but never get called out on it because they kiss Slaveocrat ass at the expense of the next generations of gay men and lesbians. Second, we get kicked out of our own movements in the name of “inclusion,” which is like drinking for sobriety. Both of these need to change and they need to change right now.

Oh, Garrett Clayton just admitted what should have been obvious to everyone: he’s gay. I knew it. His name is a FACTS OF LIFE reference (Garrett as in Edna Garrett) combined with a GOLDEN GIRLS reference (Blanche’s gay brother Clayton), and he might just be the gayest thing to come out of Burbank since The Reluctant Dragon!

Disney should pull the film and re-shoot all of Jack Whitehall’s scenes with Garrett. If they could replace Kevin Spacey with Christopher Plummer, then this needs to happen.
