    Yes, personal interactions and experiences can certainly shift social attitudes, sometimes ahead of the human rights public policy.

    The problem is that when you are living in a very right-wing community where the gay community is fragmented, disorganized and generally leery changing social attitudes for the better.

    If you afraid that honesty will cost you your job, home and possibly even your safety and security, you are probably not going to want to help change attitudes as a gay person or a straight ally.
