“the country has gone way past civil unions to marriage for gay couples”
As a legal matter, civil marriages in the United States are civil unions. In contrast to other countries, civil marriage in the United States has no religious content or context whatsoever.

That particular article’s reading was worth waiting for this blog to address the subject. If that was his old position I do not mind hearing it.
I suppose the consideration of family is the one thing Pope Benedict forgot. A lot of doctrine seems written in a way that imagines an impossible individualism to be practical. I’ll refrain from concluding it’s because the last two Popes were survivors of totalitarian ideologies that rejected the worth of the individual. The church being the replacement “family” is not the way all religions or lives are run.
I don’t really have the energy to react a second time.
