People who know the workings of conservative intellectual Catholicism tell me it is incredibly significant that Joseph Bottum now supports same-sex marriage. Here’s Bottum’s essay, published online in Commonweal. And here’s the New York Times story.

As an outsider, I don’t feel comfortable entering into Christian theological discussions, either intra-denominational (e.g. disputes among Catholics about Catholic theology) or inter-denominational (e.g. arguments over whether or not Catholics and/or Mormons are “Christian”).
I note, however, that polls consistently suggest that Americans who self-identify as Catholic are more supportive of marriage equality than Americans as a whole, and have for a long time.
While I welcome every convert to equality, it seems to me that the overall support for marriage equality among Catholics is more important than Bottum’s new found support (if that is what it is) for marriage equality and/or the negative reaction of other conservative Catholics to his defection from their anti-equality ranks.

(That essay reads a lot more like an alert neutrality than support.
70% of the essay is reconciling a political neutrality with the Catholic suicide instinct. Actually pulled it off, too.)
