I’ve lived through the struggle since Stonewall in my adulthood. It was very hard slogging for a long time, but the cultural change in the last five years has been breathtaking, in retrospect.
The most critical change occurs tonight, at midnight. Americans will not long tolerate continued legal discrimination toward men and women who put their lives on the line for our country.

Mostly this change has been in the last five years. I’m old enough to remember advertisers pulling ads from thirtysomething for showing two men in bed. (The two weren’t even touching. Just laying their talking.) Fast forward to Brothers and Sisters where the gay relationship was treated the same as all the other relationships on the show. But more importantly, there are out working actors who are not playing gay roles. NPH is the best example, as is Jane Lynch. There are a number of not officially out actors and media personalities who make no effort to appear straight. That might not be what activists want, but it’s a huge step up from fake marriages and “beards” that were common a few decades ago.
