Family Values

New Census Bureau data reveals child rearing among same-sex couples is more common in the South than in any other region of the country, and that, as the New York Times reports, “Gay couples in Southern states like Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas are more likely to be raising children than their counterparts on the West Coast, in New York and in New England.”

Another interesting finding: “Moreover, gay men who have children do so an average of three years earlier than heterosexual men, census data shows.”

Those gay people; they’re just such family values conservatives!

Can’t prove it but I believe most gay men in heterosexual marriages married before coming out so were pretty young when they got married. And, of course, were more likely to have children at a younger age.

Several of my once married gay friends at one time or the other has laughingly said he was 19 or 20 0r 21 and a virgin when he got married. Guess it wasn’t a joke.

So you think it’s not so much that gays are more likely to have children young, it’s that they’re less likely to have children when they’re old because by then they’re out.

Hmm. That does make sense in a rather boring way.

The reporting on this story leaves a lot to be desired. As a percentage of gay people in the area there are more gay couples in the South than in other areas. That’s doesn’t mean there are more gay couples with children in the South than in other areas.

Which makes the lack of attention paid to the bans, or proposed bans, on gay adoption or foster care in those states even more strange.

    Arkansas does already ban it.

Isn’t Rick Scott going to try the same in Florida?

I live in Chattanooga, TN, and I love it here. People are very friendly, even gay tricks call you again instead of disapearing, and in my first three weeks I made three friends. The South is great, of course, it’s not a good idea for same-sex couples to hold hands here, but who needs that anyway? PDA’s are disgusting.
