Pocket-Picking Time, Again

From activist/blogger Michael Petrelis, on the upcoming Washington, DC, Democratic Party fundraiser being hosted by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and others:

It is time to close the LGBT checkbook and ATM for the Democratic Party, until such time as the party actually delivers some real legislative and presidential-driven changes and advancement for LGBT people.

But if LGBT beltway operatives didn't raise money unconditionally for the Democratic Party, what would they do?

Another snide snarky comment from Stephen H. Miller. Imagine that!

Never fear. It’s too ingrained in them. They’ll be dragged up from the slave shack, cleaned up, and trotted out to raise more cash for their Dem masters, just like always. Then, once the party’s over, it’ll be back to the obscurity of the shack until the next time they become a convenience & not a “liability.” . . .

Obama is not a “ride in and kill the bad-guys” kind of guy. He’s slow and subtle.

He will do the right thing but not in the obvious way too many of you seem to want. And the result will be, his reforms will LAST.

Give him a few years before you cut him off. When you feel mad, take a midol.

I would say, anyone who doesn’t suspend judgement on Obama and all gay questions AT LEAST until Senator Franken gets seated cannot be serious. Last month the RNC spent a million bucks on delaying it. Having them operate under fear of running out of money for it is a serious part of the strategic landscape.

Seriously, if you can hear the proposition “Obama should tread lightly on red-meat until Senator Franken gets seated” and not answer “of course, that’s obvious”, then you’re either dumber than I am or a great deal smarter.

Why do you think Clinton had to compromise with DADT in the first place? Too many officers went ape-sh*t which will still happen, not as many but some, AND, it was too great a motivator for the Enemy.

The problem is that as it is now, the US military hierarchy, training and so on, depends on the implied threat that if one trainee stands out the others will gang rape him. Like in FULL METAL JACKET, you know? R. Lee Ermey was a marine drill seargent and he wrote most of his own script.

—Read Animal Farm and you will see a story of false promises, the pigs keep promising more food and less work while delivering the opposite. Whenever a democrat talks about collective sacrifice and voluntarism, be afraid, be very afraid.

Stephen, hard as it may be to believe, every one of the gay people giving the Democrats money is doing it voluntarily. So no pockets are being picked. Personally, I wasn’t planning to give $1,000 to the DNC anyway, but this evening, while the gay DNC event is going on, I’ll be at a fundraiser for Anthony Woods, the black gay ex-servicemember who is running for U.S. Congress in the 10th District of California, the seat that will shortly be vacated by Rep. Ellen Tauscher, who was nominated Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Affairs by Obama.

I generally prefer to give directly to individual candidates instead of party organizations.

Bobby, if you are determined to view someone through the prism of Animal Farm, you will doubtlessly succeed. Whether it’s an accurate view is another matter. Believe it or not, some of us who disagree with you are neither blind nor stupid. My support for Obama was not based on an expectation that he would magically enact my agenda in the first 150 days of his presidency. Nor do I expect political friendships to be perfect. In fact I like the president that I got, though not perfectly. If I get a chance I will show him a picture of my overseas partner and ask him to endorse the Uniting American Families Act.

I give a fairly small amount of money to politicians, and have never made that a big part of my activism. The focus of my activism is almost entirely on local issues in D.C., and at the local level I have been able to get things done not by greasing palms but by building individual relationships and establishing a reputation for reliability and fairness. A former GLAA president who now deals with MD state legislators says she wishes it worked the same way in Annapolis, but there it’s all about money. Steve’s characterization is accurate with regard to a lot of people; but some of us manage to be effective activists without fitting that mold.

OK, Bobby, so your idea is, if he doesn’t do everything you want immediately, you write him off?

Gay rights are succeeding now, after half a century, because supporters STOPPED thinking like that.

Look at the Republican party. Anyone who tries to slow down the extremism even a little gets ostracised. That’s why they’re in the toilet–and you want us to do the same thing to Obama???
