Mish-Mash

The Classical Values blog ponders why sexual liberation for gays and others got tied to the nanny state left. Blogger Eric writes:

I don't think it is rational for Republicans to declare war on sex and to appear to embrace erotophobia, because of their traditional "leave people alone" philosophy, but there's not a damned thing I can do about it except write posts like this. As to the Democrats, they see sex not as a form of freedom to be embraced, but as something to be manipulated to gain power.

He continues:

I think that the anti-sex wing of the GOP is colluding with the Democrats to make other Republicans afraid. Not merely afraid of sex, but afraid to talk about sex unless they condemn it.

Of course, civil equality for gay people is not the same as "sex," but it may be true that "erotophobia" is as much responsible for anti-gay animus as the nebulous "homophobia." In any event, the "right" has become a coalition of libertarian/small government "leave us alone" types, capitalist free marketers, pro-trade globalizers and social reactionaries who don't mind using the state as a cudgel, while the "left" conjoins civil libertarians with anarcho-nihilists, enviro-Luddites, union reactionaries, redistributionists and total-statists. So why expect coherence?

I think it’s because in the United States*, the centre-right/Republicans saw the potential of militant fundamentalist Christians as a sizable political constituency, and exploited it. In other world centre-right parties, there’s greater pluralism, and more representation of libertarians/

centre-right social liberals than is the case in your version.

*and Australia, to a lesser extent.

Don’t blame everything on Christians. I saw the documentary “Deep Throat Exposed” and the feminist movement fought very hard against pornography.

Christians just don’t want their kids being told that having orgies is natural, and that all boys explore their sexuality by having sex with other boys, as a speaker did in Boulder Colorado.

For the most part, Christians don’t care what you do as long as it doesn’t affect them. They don’t even complain about LOGO, they’re actually hoping all gay programming will move there, LOL.

For the most part, this is true of almost ALL people.

But if you’re talking about the fundamentalist Christians that have helped to destroy the GOP, i think you would have to amend it to:

“For the most part, Christians don’t care what you do as long as it doesn’t conflict with their extreme and irrational (mis)interpretation of Scripture.”

Precisely — and when they made this strategic decision, they underestimated the size of gay people and their allies who, unsurprisingly, tended to default towards supporting the party of their enemies’ enemy.

While Democratic duplicity since then has underscored the dangers of “the enemy of my enemy” politics, it was the Republican Party that made the first move in driving all the LGBTQ people over there.

It also doesn’t help that gay Republicans are largely missing in action on gay rights. They complain, ceaselessly, that people ignore their opinion on issues — then, when they have the opportunity to use their GOPower to lobby Republicans like Arnie on gay marriage, they’re MIA.

Once again, they’ve made themselves irrelevant in the LGBTQ community. The lefties haven’t made themselves relevant, but they still are above “irrelevant” or even worse, “dangerous,” so they continue to have greater support.

If Republicans want gay support, and LCR want gay respect, they’re going to have to earn it.

Whining on internet forums with pseudonyms, demanding that everyone else do the heavy lifting for them, ain’t gonna get ’em there.

Wow, you must be joking. Most Christians oppose gay relationships which affect them not at all. Most Christians want to prevent gays from marrying when it is inconceivable that the gay couple down the street marrying in any way affects their marriage. No group has been more determined to interefere in what gays are doing than Christians.
