Republicans like Virginia Sen. George Allen wasted no time in twisting and exploiting the New Jersey ruling, although some like New Jersey senate contender Tom Kean Jr. aren't sure how far to go in risking their moderate image. Meanwhile, from a pro-same-sex-marriage standpoint, Democrats like N.J. Gov. Jon Corzine haven't exactly been profiles in courage.
More. Bush, of course, has been shamefully pandering to the base as well.
On a more positive note: A good piece from the Philly Inquirer, Living before the Law: Gay Couples Yearn for Rights that Marriage Conveys.

There’s a rather popular cliche which goes something like this:
“The only person who ultimately looks out for your own interests is you.”
If gay people continue to sacrifice themselves and their families on the altar of “political convenience” which the Democrats demand (i.e. “stop these ‘unproductive’ efforts to win your rights — they’re hurting our election chances!”) or if they continue to prostitute themselves for political power (hello, closeted Washingtonian Republicans), they cannot be surprised when this sort of thing happens.
Unless and until the Republicrats become fully aware of negative consequences of their relations with the gay community in general when they attack our basic right to exist and our constitutional equality under the law, they will persist in such games.
Unfortunately, the popular argument of “let’s just support the better of two evils” allows the sorts of “discussion” that you are pointing to. The Republicans talk about the filthy fags and their agenda, while the Democrats say “well I’m not really FRIENDS with the faggot, I just think you should go easy on him because there are more important things.”

Sure, there is demogogery on both sides. But the amazing thing is how little the NJ decision has affected this election. Everyone is focused on Iraq and Bush’s lack of competence. I’m no expert by any means, but I really don’t see a huge uplift to the GOP because of this decision.
Don’t know the reasons — SSM fatigue? Higher concern about the war? But it’s welcome nonetheless. And once the public decides it’s not an issue, it becomes very difficult to make the same thing an issue in the future. This bodes well for us, I think.
