If Pete wins in Iowa, he could lock in the support of the party’s moderates and center left as Biden falls away and possibly emulate Obama’s path to the nomination. But unlike Obama in 2008, the party’s base, on the coasts and big cities, is much farther to the left and will probably coalesce around Warren over Sanders. That would mean an ugly fight with Warren leading to the convention.

Meanwhile, the Democrats impeachment overreach is playing well with the base but not so much with others, aiding Trump.

Big question: Where will black support go if/when Biden drops out. Not to elitist scold Warren who profited by being a pretend person of color. But also not to a gay candidate who would have a first husband.

If 90% of black Americans can overcome their race’s homophobic and pro-life tendencies and pull the lever for Hillary Clinton, then Buttigeig has nothing to worry about on account of his sexual orientation.

What he has to worry about is a reputation as a mayor who is anti-black at worst and tone-deaf at best.

It’s not that difficult. But it does require him to go out and listen. You know Hillary Clinton’s listening tour was panned as arrogant and hokey as heck, but one thing I think came from it was her ability to respond well enough to the changes in the Democratic electorate during the Black Lives Matter movement.

Has anyone even told him to his face that he’s a sinner yet? Mitt Romney had that moment. Hillary Clinton has had plenty of those moments. This guy can’t even get a racial crisis right when his response is choregraphed. What happens when someone deals a low blow punch? I want to know.

Seriously now, Mayor Pete’s policy history on race issues isnt great. that may be why he has not played wonderfully well.

I think maybe you’re looking at this the wrong way. It’s not “Would loyally Democratic groups turn against Buttigieg because he’s a sausage-gobbler,” but rather, “Would #NeverTrump and #NoMoreTrumpPlease Republicans refuse to ‘defect’ if the Democratic nominee were a sausage-gobbler?”

Seriously — I think the main risk of Buttigieg, from the Democratic side, is that he wouldn’t attract enough swing-votes from the GOP, because of his sexual orientation. The danger of socially-conservative Democrats voting for Trump’s reelection, because they don’t want a homo in the White House, seem pretty small.
