And “progressives” wonder why the white working class went for Trump.

Actually, progressives don’t wonder, the operative word in your descriptor being “white”.

Republicans have been playing “white identity” politics since the days of “seg schools” and the “Southern Strategy”, and that’s not likely to change anytime soon. Trump is a master of the game.

Using gays and lesbians as political cannon fodder was an afterthought, born of an attempt to keep conservative Christians in the fold, but it was, and remains, just icing on the cake.

As Bruce Balmer recently put it: ““I’ve resisted throughout my career the notion that evangelicals are racist, I really have. But I think the 2016 election demonstrated that the religious right was circling back to the founding principles of the movement. What happened in 2016 is that the religious right dropped all pretense that theirs was a movement about family values.”

The reference was to Randall Balmer, not Bruce, the musician.

Corruption: apparently, its OK when it produces the results you like, but not when it doesn’t.

Well, when I think of the Pence-Putin-Pussy party, I can’t help but wonder at how closely the last year illustrates the definition of inversion: put upside down or in the opposite position, order, or arrangement.

“Government contracts should never be awarded on the basis of identity group membership!”

I do not believe in affirmative action. I believe it doesn’t have any broad social benefit and that it has hidden broad negative social consequences. I suppose the “spoils” system would be a distant third reason.

I would be very hesitant to join a “never!” campaign on the basis of assuming as fact the worst possible assumptions of a longstanding establishment progressive idea.

Off topic, but the WP has an interesting “Perspective” column this morning.

Okay, so what’s *your* proposal for eliminating bias from the system? Or are y’all really under the delusion that if you just get rid of that pesky “affirmative action” that everything will magically become a merit-based system?

Fact is, unless you think that there’s a real non-prejudicial reason for straight white men to be superior at every aspect of business, then there’s bias going on. So I’m not against discussing alternate ways to purge bias from the system. But don’t stick you’re head in the sand either.
