They’ll Keep a Little List

So, according to the Task Force and its LGBT progressive allies, Trump is a fascist who wants to put LGBT people in camps, and we must demand that the federal government, as it has never done before (even under 8 years of Obama), now ask every resident about their sexual orientation.

Thanks to @TheTaskForce, government will compile a database of LGBTQ citizens and residents. What could go wrong?

The survey in question (the Census Barriers, Attitudes and Motivators Study, or “CBAMS”) is a small (less than 5,000 respondents) statistical sampling designed to identify barriers to participation in the decennial census, next to be conducted in 2020. The identity of individuals participating is discarded, as a matter of law, before the data is processed.

It is hardly an effort to “compile a database of LGBTQ citizens and residents” except in the Boaz’s overheated imagination.

If Boaz would bother to get his facts straight before going all Chicken Little, he’d look less a moron than he does.

      Not really.

First-up, trying to make the census a scary thing is just plain ol’ fear-mongering.

Second-up, if the government actually wanted to know who was gay and not, they wouldn’t bother looking at the census. They’d sic the NSA on Google and Amazon’s databases.

That’s just what I needed to have in my head before going to bed.

      Exactly.

Privately-collected data already exists to accurately predict who is, and who is not, LGBT. Private companies purchase and use that data to micro-target ads. Both political parties use that data to micro-target voters, including LGBT voters. It is just a fact of life in the “information age”.

The government wouldn’t have to use the NSA or anyone else to get that data. All the government would have to do is buy it, directly or indirectly.

Conservative Christians are determined that the Census Bureau won’t collect any data on LGBTs because accurate data about LGBTs will stand in contradiction to the misinformation upon with conservative Christians depend to shape government policies and public attitudes. LGBTs have done a lot, privately, to shine the light on the lies, but conservative Christians haven’t given up. The conservative Christian effort to stop the government from obtaining accurate information about gays and lesbians for the purpose of formulating rational policy is yet another front on which we have to fight for equality.

CATO’s sole purpose in politics is to dress up Republican dreck de jour with libertarian-sounding rhetoric, employing deception and misdirection as needed. Boaz’s mini-screed is just the latest example.

These scare-mongers ignore the real threat which is Trump monitoring social media for immigrants and (soon) citizens. Maybe Mr Miller doesn’t mind that his adam4adam account is watched.

Racial profiling was held unconstitutional decades ago. Infrared sensors blocked on search and seizure grounds. For every battle decided against the government, the government finds away around the new rule in pursuit of one policy goal or another. The few politicians who consistently and persistently speak out against such far-reaching executive authority fall flat as they associate with the bizarre and the politicians with the most will to make people feel immediately comforted win the votes.

Since I vote based on my personal security, I am firmly on the government’s side on this one, and I find the increasing sophistication of campaigns against such things as proactive law enforcement and anti-terrorism extremely unsettling. I believe that keeping aggressive goals while placing a high constitutional bar makes for extremely effective government–a force of competition makes things better.

By the way, speaking of collecting and distributing my personal information, I’m astonished at what’s popping up on this site’s ads just now. Someone’s obviously about to notice a change.

Well, I don’t think that this is the first time a similar question was asked. The 2000 census data on gay couples was noted in Lawrence v Texas arguments .
