Progressives explain it all to you

Trump supports gay rights, which is code for being anti-Islam, thereby proving he’s a fascist, writes Amanda Erickson at the Washington Post.

More. This is all reminiscent of the left’s attacks on Israel’s support for gay legal equality and inclusion, which progressives call “pinkwashiing,” described by Mark Joseph Stern as the presumption that “the Israeli government has no interest in promoting LGBTQ rights except to help mask its oppression of other groups.”

[Added: Pete Buttigieg, gay mayor of South Bend, Ind., with higher political aspirations, in a Washington Blade interview, lambasts “the level of ‘pinkwashing’ of the Trump campaign.” When nonprogresives support LGBT rights, it’s insidious.]

Furthermore. Vice President Mike Pence tells ABC News: “I think throughout the campaign, President Donald J. Trump made it clear that discrimination would have no place in our administration. He was the very first Republican nominee to mention the LGBTQ community at our Republican National Convention and was applauded for it. And I was there applauding with him.”

Kind of a stretch to go from this:

But support for gay rights isn’t antithetical to a populist, anti-immigrant leader. In fact, it’s very much in keeping with the far-right strategy across Europe. In France, the Netherlands and Germany, right-wing leaders have embraced causes such as gay rights and feminism. Islam, they argue, is a threat to the very people protected by these social movements.

    to this:

I welcome President Trump’s vow to protect gays and lesbians from foreign terrorism, although I did wonder why the President made such a big deal about singling us out from other Americans in his acceptance speech. It struck me as kind of odd at the time, and still does.

I hope that the President will also advance equal treatment under the law for gays and lesbians, as for all citizens.

      Just the facts.. …

Most European governments have already adopted civil rights protections for LGBT people, have some sort of public health care system.

European Union members have agreed to specfic treaties that require a fairly progressive LGBT rights bill (among other civil and political rights) to be made law.

Even the UK, facing the Britexit mess, is probably not going to see a successful push to undermine the LGBT rights legislation .

The Conservative parties (that want real political power) have had to revoncile their beliefs with gay rights, with a public health care system, with labor unions. This is a different game then here in America.

President Trump has decided to keep a set of Obama-era, executive orders dealing with equal opportunity. Bravo.

Is it good that the Executive Orders are being kept in place? Yes. Hopefully they wont be abolished or watered down later on.

Hopefully the policy decisions made by the administration wont undermine the progress that has been made.

To be accurate, one Executive Order (13672) is being kept in place. No decision on any of the other EO’s affecting gays and lesbians, or on departmental regulations.

The ban on Muslim immigrants was not remotely well thoughtout. You can”t fight terrorism or craft a sane immigration policy, if you make ametur and shortsighted mistakes.

The ban has imposed terrible burdens on countless families – including LGBT immigrants .

“Trump’s support of gays is right out of the European far-right playbook”

Wait, considering that Europe is overall more progressive in its legal and social acceptance of gays than the United States is, isn’t that a good sign for gays?

I would also point out that what’s meanstream conservative in the United States is in the misanthropic right field in Europe.

“…and a rare bit of good news from an administration run by Mike Pence”

Okay, I’ve already discarded this article in the trash heap.

I can see that after eight years of hope and change, we’re bringing back the old canard about centrist Republican administrations being run by conservative Vice Presidents. I don’t know what planet the author is from but I think this is no accident. To use a cliche, this is fake news being promoted to an angsty and ignorant sub-group. You know what I think of that? I’m wiping the seat of my pants with the computer screen, that’s what I think.

This makes me distrust the author’s decision to label certain political parties as “far right”. Is a party still far-right if it’s successfully purged itself of racist and homophobic political language? I would have to say no. Especially in the context of a region that over the past 3 years or so seems to have been experiencing mass casualty terror attacks at about the same rate Israel was in the 1990s.

I don’t share the author’s sympathies one bit, and I have to question the facts she chooses to highlight. Puts a lot of worthwhile facts out there, I will admit.

Those aren’t progressives. They are leftists. Yes, pinkwashing is crap. So is right-wingers pretending they care about how Muslims treat gay people in the middle east only to score political points. They don’t give a fuck about gay people anywhere, especially not the Muslim ones.

Stephen has never made a distinction between “progressive”, “leftist” and “liberal”. He mushes the three political philosophies, which have distinct histories and ideologies, together as interchangeable cogs in his scorn machine, presumably out of ignorance, or possibly because his polemics would implode if he made any distinctions.

I guess that makes the GOP far-right: read the 2016 Platform.
