Freedom Defended

Via Towelroad:

Leading UK gay activist Peter Tatchell has come out in support of a Belfast baker who was found guilty of discrimination for refusing to bake a cake with the slogan “Support Gay Marriage”.

Spot on. A commitment to liberty means liberty for all, no matter how furious it makes progressive authoritarians.

Absolutely, so long as “liberty for all” means that the “equal means equal” test (religion-neutral, issue-neutral, class-neutral) is met.

If it doesn’t — that is if discrimination is celebrated (as it is on IGF) only when the discrimination is aimed at gays and lesbians but in no other cases, we aren’t talking about “freedom for all” so much as political expediency.

You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to figure out where I think Stephen fits into that picture.

“The judge concluded that service providers are required to facilitate any “lawful” message, even if they have a conscientious objection. This raises the question: should Muslim printers be obliged to publish cartoons of Mohammed?”

Yes, yes, YES! Let’s invite Satan to rule over the most famous Protestant country in the world with wanton cruelty toward religious believers. God Hates England!

Actually I think Muslim printers should be obliged to publish cartoons of Mohammed. (What about gay pornographic cartoons of Mohammed?) Okay, never mind. But you know, people should be free not to publish cartoons of Mohammed for more reasons than because it offends them.

Uh, that happened with the Church of England was founded and England broke with Rome. Right?

What Stephen really means is ‘liberty for all. . . except LGBT’.
