Constrained Freedom

by Stephen H. Miller on March 22, 2012

David Boaz writes at the Huffington Post about Cal Thomas’s Confusion About Freedom. I especially liked the blurb David posted on his Facebook page:

“Syndicated columnist Cal Thomas LOVES freedom. Just read his column today. Except the freedom to smoke pot, read pornography, love the person you love, marry the person you love, etc.”

‘Freedom’ is a word that probably everyone — left, right, center — claims to love. The key issue is how people define ‘freedom’ and when are they willing to sacrifice freedom for something else.

Conservatives tend to be willing to sacrifice freedom to achieve ‘order’ or ‘tradition’. Liberals tend to be willing to sacrifice freedom to achieve ‘equality’ or ‘fairness’.
