Bye, Bye, Andrew Shirvell

Assistant Michigan Attorney General Andrew Shirvell has been fired by AG Mike Cox. Shirvell, as you may have read, blogged obsessively to condemn homosexuals in general and in particular Chris Armstrong, the openly gay student body president at the University of Michigan (Shirvell’s alma mater). Shirvell even showed up outside Armstrong’s building on the U of M campus late at night to protest the goings on he supposed were going on inside. Anyhow, here’s a very snarky parody about it all, via Popehat.

    Hmm.

“To be clear, I refuse to fire anyone for exercising their First Amendment rights, regardless of how popular or unpopular their positions might be. However, Shirvell repeatedly violated office policies, engaged in borderline stalking behavior, and inappropriately used state resources, our investigation showed.”

I’ll take it. Stealing government time is a firable offense, the other offenses are discretionary judgments, and the decision (and the process that led up to it) puts radicals on notice that First Amendment rights are more important than identity politics. It’s a draw.

He was also caught lying to the investigators about what he was doing at his workplace. He can’t make a case based on first amendment rights about that.

When it comes to government workers my only concern is how much money they make:

Of course, harassing a private citizen is a no-no.
